Needlepoint Finishing FAQ

Answers to the questions stitchers ask most about having a canvas finished by Cheryl's Needlework Finishing.

What is needlepoint finishing?

Finishing is everything that happens after the last stitch: the canvas is blocked and pressed, sewn into its final shape, and finished with cording, fringe or trim, a lining and a backing - turning flat stitched canvas into a pillow, ornament, purse, stocking, stand-up or another keepsake.

What can Cheryl's Needlework Finishing make from my canvas?

Almost anything: pillows, Christmas and keepsake ornaments, purses and evening bags, heirloom stockings, weighted stand-ups and figures, brick covers, bean bags, box tops, boxes and trays, needle and scissors cases, magnets, bookmarks, bell pulls, door hangers, mini-stockings and framed pieces.

Where are you located, and do you work with out-of-town stitchers?

The studio is in Chesterfield, Missouri, in St. Louis County. We finish for St. Louis-area needlepoint shops and for individual stitchers across the United States - simply mail your completed canvas.

How do I get an estimate?

Email cheryl@cherylsfinishing.com or call (636) 530-0884 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. CST, Monday to Friday. Tell us the canvas size, the finished piece you have in mind and any fabrics or trims you like, and we will reply with a no-obligation estimate.

Do you sell the Hanki-Panki evening bags to individuals?

The Hanki-Panki evening bags from the A Clasp Act collection are available wholesale only. For retail purchase, contact your local needlepoint shop and ask them to order one for you.

What fabrics, linings and trims do you use?

Typical finishing materials include silk dupioni and checked silk linings, ultrasuede, velveteen, congress cloth, hand-made twisted cording in two or three colours, custom fringe, custom-dyed fibres and glass-sand weighting for stand-ups and pincushions.

Can you monogram a finished piece?

Yes. Monogramming is one of our services - the Hanki-Panki evening bags, for example, include a monogrammed pocket and a monogrammed hankie, and monograms can be worked into linings and pockets on many other pieces.

Which canvas designers have you finished?

The gallery includes canvases by designers such as Sharon G, Kathy Schenkel, Shelly Tribbey, Dakota Rogers, Raymond Crawford, Designs by Dee, Associated Talents, Princess & Me and more. We are happy to finish canvases from any designer - or your own design.

How should I care for a finished needlepoint piece?

Keep finished pieces out of prolonged direct sunlight, dust ornaments and stand-ups with a soft brush, and keep pillows and stockings dry. For deep cleaning, consult a textile care professional - finished pieces combine fabrics and trims that need gentle treatment.

How long does finishing take?

Timing depends on the piece and the season - stockings and ornaments are naturally busiest ahead of the holidays. Contact Cheryl with your canvas details and your target date, and we will confirm the current schedule with your estimate.
